Budget low low gears
« on: Aug 25, 2002, 01:09:38 PM »
:ack:
I'd like to get low gears and lockers for wheeling without spending $3000. My 22r never sees highway use, so I am thinking leave the stock 4.10's (33" tire), put in  lock-right or quick loks front and rear, and add a double t-case.
I live on a small island with a speed limit of 25mph and not a single hill. So I only need the gears for crawling around on the reef and crossing to the next island at low tide (reliability here is key as well as not geting stuck).
Anybody have thoughts on this.
my other thought is go with gears (5.29) and detroits since now the labor cost goes up and might as well change the carrier.
Any help would be great.
Thanks.

I'd say the dual case will make you happier as far as crawl gearing....I've never used lock rights so I can't say if they are good or not. If you plan on running a larger tire in the future then I would go with the 5.29:1 gears and detroits

i have never done it myself.  i have only heard and read about it.  here is a link to a POR thread on the subject.  there are many more on that forum.  i don't think anyone here has talked about it yet though i will do a search after writing this.
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48455&highlight=welded+spiders

basicly what i get from it is that you need to weld the spiders together.  some folks weld the side spiders to the carrier also.  i don't know which is the best.  i was considering doing it myself but i found a good deal on a detroit.
what i was going to try was to just over-weld the heck out of them.  welding them all together including to the carrier.  (i figured i'd just cut my losses on the carrier.)

but like it said i never did it so i don't speak from experience.  some say that spools are more reliable because there is no room for error with welding.  but i think that if you know how to weld good there wouldn't be any problems.  a buddy of mine welded his on his scout, front and rear, and never had any breakage.

I've decided to go with Detroits and 5.29's.
It will cost around $1700 installed but it will be strong as hell and give me the best umph in 2 or 4 wheel.
Later I may still add a 2nd t-case. I am thinking a second stocker w/ adapter would work for me.
As per the welded (lincoln) lockers, I think if you were a good welder go for it. Costs almost nothing.
I've seen spools for $199 and they look strong and might keep your mind at ease when romping far from home.
Thanks for the coments.
