CHARGING SYSTEM DILEMMA
« on: Apr 25, 2005, 04:30:42 AM »
Im at the end of my rope with my charging system.  I have a 79 Toy 4x4 that is running a 20r with a IC type alternator. What type of voltage reg am i suppost to use 5 wire or 6 wire.  Im running a brand new 6 wire unit and out put is next to zero.

The Alternantor is brand new, and Ive trouble shot the wiring harness to the best of my ability.  The ground is good, and the reg is recieving the correct voltage as far as i can figure out.

The type of reg is a Wells, ive tried a Sorrenson, which lasted a couple of weeks, this may have been my fault as i left the ignition on over night. There are no Toyota dealerships in the local area as id like to try a genuine toy unit.

But as i said earlier this brand new wells is producing 13 volts ay 3000 rpm and and load at all knocks the out put back to straight battery voltage. Is there an up grade out there there has a simple 1 wire hook up that is fool proof while at the same time cam be made to run the tach and other stuff that runs off of the charging system.      :help:

Aftermarket junk never works on Toyotas.  Go down to the dealership and get a Toyota reman alternator and regulator.

You know dude you are totally right.  I went to the junk yard and bought a reg off of an old truck for $10.00 and it works great.  Prior to that I went back and forth with Advance Auto 2 different times with the regulater that they carry and both were defective and failed to work.   :yesnod:
