Fire extinguishers
« on: Nov 03, 2021, 04:07:02 PM »
Who has one in their truck?  I want one made for vehicles.  No electrical conductivity and non-damaging to my electrical system.  Any suggestions?

I've got one that is large and inconvenient. I still haven't found a good place for it in my truck. Usually just toss it on the passenger floor when I go wheeling.

I've been kind of curious about these https://dasmule.com/products/elements-e50-fire-exstingusher?_pos=1&_sid=cc7440461&_ss=r

That's new to me.  Interesting.

The last one I had was from Costco.  I was not truly convinced on the requirements I'm looking for.  I'm no professional racer and don't a full "system", just don't want some small fire to turn big and burn my truck down.  Or some other persons either.

There's no partial use with the elements extinguisher...

Once you start it, it keeps going...........

First.... I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that a fire extinguisher be fastened and secured to something with a quick release extinguisher bracket or velcro!  You do NOT want a 2, 5, or 10 lb. extinguisher flying around inside a vehicle!!

A good high quality 2.5 lbs ABC should be adequate for an auto fire, or campfire fire, etc.  A 5 lb. one would be my choice.

If you are overly concerned about possible damage caused by ammonium phosphate, you can always heat up your credit card with one filled with halon.

If you have ever been in a fire or had to discharge a fire extinguisher you know how short of time they actually work.... typically 5 to 15 seconds.  A fire can be very "large and inconvenient"!

In my 4Runner I have a 1.5 lb clean agent extinguisher mounted in front of the passenger seat. I think it's called Halotron. Similar to Halon but not as toxic or bad for the environment or something. It's a bit pricey but doesn't leave a corrosive powder on everything. I guess I'd use that on an in-cab fire. It's clean and within reach when buckled into the driver's seat. In the trunk/cargo area I have a 2.5 lb ABC dry-chem extinguisher. I'd use that for any other fire or if I'm saving someone else's rig.

Yeah I'm aware. My "setup" sucks but at least I've got one and so do the people I wheel with. 5 Lbs is what I have now.
I had an electrical meltdown from a shorted coil wire once. Happened about an hour and a half  into the trail from the nearest service road. Fire extinguisher wasn't needed (Thank God ). Had to get hauled out by a Yj, probably the proudest day of that jeeps life  :D. Definitely inconvenient but all things considered it was still a good day.

Anyway,   The Element E50. 50 sec. discharge, small package, clean/non corrosive, non toxic, not effected by weather, no maintenance, no expiration.
I probably should order a couple of these.

Proper use is paramount.  Whichever one you use, Spray at rhe BASE OF THE FLAME to separate the flame from the fuel.  I've wathed Jeeps burn to the ground because the meatballs operating the extinguisher were busy sraying over the flame and pushing the flame onto the fuel.  be safe and be smart, were Toyota owners and we need to set a better example.   :twocents:

my dad showed me something about putting out an oil fire.  A tray full of used engine oil after a change.  Lit it on fire, shot the garden hose into the tub of oil.  It splashed out launching flaming oil all over.

The he showed me a wide shower from the garden hose that encircled the oil pan.  It worked better.

My old extinguisher was Halotron but had low capacity.  Also I like the bracket from Defined Engineering but I have no internal cage for mounting
