You will never learn a lesson as well as you would have if you learned it the hard way. That's pretty much the story of my "career" as a backyard mechanic.
Even though I have only been doing this for a few years, I can frequently watch people and say things like:
"Make sure that bolt is tight.... you don't even wanna know what happens if it's not."
"You should probably fix that...they tend to fail at the most inopportune times."
"I wouldn't do that....if you want to keep your fingers."
"Why?... because I learned the hard way."
And I'm always screwing up.... err... "learning"...
