I'd stay local to your work if possible. I was looking for places to live off and on for the last two years before finding my current place(series of bad places that didn't "work"), so I can literally tell you which streets and specific areas are good and bad. It's easier to show you on a map, though, but online is also possible. I can't stress enough how critical it is to NOT have a major commute in this crazy city.
