5 is stock. more advance is more power, less fuel economy, and possibly pinging. I loved running about 12*-15* but I couldn't run it all the time. 8* made more power than stock and was still happy with regular fuel.
I thought that advancing the timing effectively leaned out the fuel mixture and resulted in better fuel economy?
My 4Runner has a mild cam and likes premium fuel even with the timing in the 5-8 degree range.
