Totally dude, just do it once, even if it takes longer to save up the cash.  You'd hate to have to hear "I told ya so".  Go 1 ton from the start.  I did exactly what your doing (kinda) and learned the hard way.  But I did it by trying to build the burliest baddest toy axles.  No matter how strong the shafts are, the achilles on a toy axle is the 8 inch r&p.  So I tossed everything and built a 14b and a 60.  I spent soo much more money than needed since I did it all twice ya know.
