[li]All 1989-1993 5speed transfercases are the same again because also use the same "run quiet" low range gear set as the 1984+ units and feature a TALL reduction housing design (this time for the late model W56), but not only is it a FORWARD shift style, but its also a SHORT-ROD version of the Forward shift rods, the rods are a bit shorter than the carburated 1984-1987 forward shift style, except the late model W56 has the transmission shift lever and the transfercase shift lever closer together in the 1989-1995 model trucks to make it more "convenient" for the driver to select between the levers.[/li]
[li]All 1994-1995 5speed transfercases are identical to the 1989-1995 style transfercases except they use an ELECTRIC SPEEDOMETER GEAR SPEED SENSOR as apposed to the cable type that is found from all previous transfercases from 11/1978-10/1993[/li]

I don't recall why but my notes and the website indicates there's a difference between the 89-91 and 92-95 W56 gearboxes. One indicator is Marlin's rebuild cost is $799 for the 89-91 and $849 for the 92-95, not counting a core charge. The W56 HD option on each series also reflects a difference. Why is this so? Not the cost but what changed on the W56 in 1992?

Marlin's Transfer Case Bible reflects the Type 6B RF1A Tcase (with the electrical speedo cable drive) appeared in 1992 trucks and 4Runners. The Type 6A first appeared in the 1989 truck and 1990 4Runner.

Will a forward shifting W56 fit in a 1985 Xtra Cab without cutting the floorboard?  :driving:
