Depends how handy you are with tools and how much money/time you have to do it.  Me - I needed a quick turn-around time, so I bought a MC transmission.  If it was a project truck, I'd have yanked it and learned a few dozen things about transmissions :)

whats the worst that happens, you cant rebuild it, so you go get a MC tranny anyways and they are happy you already took it apart for them so they give you a discount? (crosses fingers)  I'm about to attempt this project very soon myself.
