If ya want to talk angles / \ vs. vertical then I would say verticle is better even though I have mine mounted like / \ this.
the shock will be most effective at vertical. the main reason people mount them like 

/\ is for space reasons. this is correct, right?  if u can cut thru the bed, more vertical is better right?
