You know, back in high school a friend of mine used to drive a 2nd gen 2WD extra cab pickup.
He called me and said that his engine is blown. Its smoking terribly. So bad that he can't even see behind him, nothing but blue clouds. He just changed his oil and now its wasted.
I was thinking he melted a piston or something..
Well it turns out that when he went to change his oil, he must have gotten distracted because he change the filter, and then added some oil. Period.

Yup, he forgot to drain out his old oil! I don't remember if he added 2 or 3 quarts, because, you know, sometimes you just add a couple quarts and then you'll stop and check the stick. So he checked it and it had oil and he didnt even think twice about it.
So now it was 2 or 3 quarts over full

I guess it was smoking from so much oil being thrown in the air from the crankshaft and the old rings couldn't keep it down.
A peek under the hood showed no signs of the engine being over filled. The lines atop the valve cover were all clean. I dont think oil would get into the intake through the breather lines because the only oil present up there is from what is being pumped up, and that really shouldn't change if the level is so high.
So I would say that 1/2 quart over filled is perfectly fine
