dumb question

on my 80 i have an L43 transmission with a forward shift tcase... so in order to make a crawl box i need a top shift tcase right? also can it be any toyota top shift tcase??

Kyle is right, you currently have a 4speed with a top shifting transfercase. So you are half way there. All you need now is another top shifting t/case, 79-83 or 85-88 EFI. I recommend the latter as the gear sets have a slightly better design.
