There's lots of readers out there now that will connect via Bluetooth/wifi to phone, tablets and PCs. I personally use one from OBDLink.
http://www.obdlink.com/. Once you get the hardware, there are several different apps you can download to use it other than the stock app. (Well, atleast on Android there is. I use one called Torque).
