I've never ran the stock carb.  But general consensus says a stock carb will out perform a Weber off-road.  But on hwy, a Weber is awesome.  My old 85 Nissan 720 had serious carb issues, and a Weber was the way to go.  It gave me almost 30 mph on hwy, and a crap load of power, and I never had issues off road.  But I never did any serious stuff.  Just fire roads. 

There are some people who has ran a Weber effectively on their crawler.  Marlin used to run one on his 20/22R hybrid, before he went to a 3RZ.   He would switch to the stock carb when he had to smog.
