One picture is a view of the whole shebang...the close up actually was nice enough to point out exactly where the putty goes.
The "support ring" points at some putty oozing in from the top side (the part of the sink you use), the putty goes on the top side of the mounting hole...the the sink flange will be set in, as you tighten it...some will squeeze out.
