After having built the truck almost a decade ago, using Marlin's high quality parts is really starting to sink in now. Nothing has broke in such a long time. I can't understand how people can put up with continually replacing cheap Chinese knock off parts.

Do yourself a HUGE favor, build your truck right the first time so you can enjoy trouble free operation. At least for me looking back at all the truck has done over the years, it's really amazing that I've done so little maintenance to it and it continues to perform at a high level.

BigMike

So true. I have only been wheeling four years but almost everything on my rigs has come from marlin or all pro. i have not once had an issue with a marlin product. Keep up the good work!!!!!

I am certain that the info is somewhere in this thread, or the 3rz thread, but How much does your truck weigh? And fast were you able to average up the steeper grades on I-80 heading to the trail?

I haven't weighed it in a while. It was around 3,200 when she had 33s and no armor. Probably around 3,500-3,700 now. I will get it weighed soon and find out how far off my guess it

I80 isn't as bad a challenge as hwy168 to Shaver Lake. I was able to hold 4th gear staying above 60 MPH without using full engine power. Heading back west was more of a challenge. Just west of Truckee I remember two long pulls and I was able to keep it in 4th gear however I had it all the way to the floor.

Our very own hwy168 east of Fresno requires 3rd gear at the last long right hander near the top. When I had 35s I could easily stay above the 3,200 RPM power band in 4th gear and I'd let up to not over rev my way to a speeding ticket. Now with the 37s I have to keep it pinned in 4th to keep it as close to the power band as possible.

The power band of my 3RZ comes on strong at 3,200 and continues until almost redline. If in a long climb in 4th gear & the revs drop to 3,000, it'll bog down and hold steady, but if it drops to 2,800 or less then it will require a downshift to 3rd to maintain the same speed. So basically anything beneath 3,200 and I'm pretty much floored. Once it gets above 3,200 I can let up a bit and still hold the same speed with less throttle.

Using our Online Marlin Crawler Speed Calculator...
3200 rpm in 4th: 66 MPH
3000 rpm in 4th: 62 MPH
2800 rpm in 4th: 58 MPH

So if I'm around 60-65 then I'll keep it pinned in 4th. If I'm able to get over 65 or so then I'll lift a bit and hold steady. If she drops under 60, then it's pretty much time to downshift to 3rd, pull back up to 65+ and then grab 4th again. Repeat.

Hope this helps!

It does a bit. In short I am kind of splitting hairs on my own future engine upgrade. 3rz is a nice engine but I want to be able to summit I80 and Hwy 50 at 60-65 if at all possible. I know my 4runner is kinda heavy too so we shall see. Thank you for the #'s. I'll probable pick your brain a little at the round up and ask how you did coming up 50.

If you want to have power "on tap" in a 4Runner, I'm not going to kid around:  go with a 3.4 V6. The 3RZ is my favorite Rock Crawling engine that happens to also have good  power. When I had 33s I'd attempt races with ricers, when I got 35s I felt I could climb a hill like a Turbo diesel, but the gap from 35 to 37 was a big one and that's where the 3RZ finds it's limit in the hills.

It takes everything it's got to maintain 65 on a grade. This wouldn't be the case with a 3.4.

Ebay, member on this site, or with some connections in Japan.   :wink2:

I did a quick Ebay search and found these I like.

I can see a nice stainless/polished plate with these on it mounted to Marlin's truck.

This is about halfway up Claw Hammer, which happens to be the very first trail I took my truck on when I built it back in 2004. I had bald 33" tires and no body armor. It is muuuuuch more difficult today than it was almost 10 years ago :_order:
