1985 1 ton pick up questions
« on: Nov 22, 2015, 08:13:00 AM »
Hello, i could not find information on this truck so i thought i would ask here. In addition to my 1985 4runner, i just traded an ak47 for a dentless rustless perfectly running 1985 1 ton  2wd pick up. Now i can't find any information on what makes these things so special, and 1 ton. Is it a full float axle? what gears does it have, etc. If anyone can point me to a good website that has some information on these, that would be great

as far as gearing goes, you can always pull rear driveshaft and look for paint code on rear pinion nut, you should see some color painted on pinion nut area, once you find color, should be easy to determine gear ratio

I know a little about them.....

the axles were weird, there were some 1 tons that had a regular toy axle, well not regular...... but they were standard size, and 5 lug (5 on 4.5") had SUA, 8" ring gear. The 2wd I had, actually had the 8" ring gear, but was a 1/2 ton... weird...... It was originally equipped with a W55, and had a 3.07 gear ratio, 22r.

Then there is the full float, big behemoth dually 1 ton.....

i had a 85 2wd 1 ton and it had the 8" ring gear with the 5x4.5 bolt pattern. mine had 4.30 gears in it and would barely do 65. I put a 3.73 3rd out of a first gen 4wd for cheap to help some but she was still always wound up.  pulled hills well that way but never got above 25 MPG where as my 86 2wd 22r 1/2 ton has achieved over 30 MPG on many road trips.

im pretty sure they had larger brakes/calipers also
the standard rear end was a 7.5 in the half ton trucks......

and as far as the 8" rear goes on the 2wds, it had drum brakes for sure.....

a lot of people actually told me that I did not have a 8" rear end in my truck, but I did.... apparently, the 8" did not come in the 2wds UNLESS they were a 1 ton..... I put 4.10 gears into it from the rear on an 86 4Runner....
