runs good but blows smoke
« on: Sep 10, 2015, 08:08:05 AM »
So I have an 87 runner with 22re. This thing runs AWESOME except it blows smoke. I am unsure if it is valve guides or rings but that is not my question. My questions is when I am cruising down the highway (it is my daily) my check engine light comes on and off. (intermittent no pattern) I pulled the codes yesterday and I got a 5, 6 and 10.

5- Open or shorted O2 circuit. I don't know if the smoke is causing this or a bad O2 sensor

6- No engine revolution sensor. I have no idea what causes this.

10- No starter switch signal for ECU with vehicle speed=0 and engine RPM > 800.  This one is weird because I only get this while driving and my speedometer works. my starter is starting to hang up but still works.

I have another engine to build (another 22re) but I am trying to save the money to build it right the first time and yes it NEEDS to be rebuilt. So can I fix these codes and keep it on the road till my other engine is done or do I just go buy another car and park the runner (not ideal I love my runner as my daily and that will mean spending more money I don't really have)

What color is the smoke, black or white?

Based on the codes, those same issue will be there even with the other motor.

it is blue. I know that the smoke is oil. I am unsure how it is getting in the cylinder but it is oil. I dont leak any but I am losing it. the codes just started recently the smoke has been there, getting worst, since i picked it up

Does it smoke when you accelerate (bad rings) or when you let off (bad valve seals)
If you see it, its for sale.

A compression test will help you determine if it is rings or valve issue(guides stuck/bent exhaust valve).

For help with the codes, if you haven't found it yet, 4crawler has a write-up here that may be useful
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TroubleCodes/#Late22RE.

With oil being introduced into the exhaust it will cause the O2 sensor to fail, so that may be the cause of code #5, I would pull the O2 and see what it looks like.  If it doesn't get a signal, it should richen the system to protect it from running lean, what is your mpg like?

Code 6 and 10 shouldn't be tied to the burning oil issue.

so I have been researching the codes. Snowtoy the website you gave me was the same website I got the codes off of. It does not really explain why I am getting the codes. The #5 code is because the O2 sensor is unhooked. Most likely because of the smoke, but I cant find anywhere that gives ideas as to why I would be getting the #6 and the #10 codes. Does anyone have any ideas on these 2? My starter is starting to go out but I dont know if that will cause the #10 code. I am strongly leaning towards buying a different 1st gen 4runner and restore it put the new motor in it and sell this one. My body is a little rough for making it a "NICE" road/camping rig.

Might also look here http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=99377.msg1107931#msg1107931, one of our members has an '88 manual that should be work for the testing process.

If you want them right away via download, you can find an '85 and '93 FSM's here,
