help me people!! it doesnt run right!!! runs rough.... it turns over slow, but starts... i was told it was the exhaust valves ect.. so i adjusted all the valves again and no luck!! its like i said has a new head gasket and a new timing chain!! also isnt it saposed to slow down or speed up when you disconnect the vacume lines that go to the distributer?? im pretty sure that all the vacume lines are connected correctly... even if they werent connected correctly i dont see what could cause it to turn over slowly.. :dunno:  :dunno:   :beerchug: HELP ME I WANT TO DRIVE MY BABY!!!!!!

are all the timing marks right?  check for vacume leaks?

also just for fun run a draw test on the starter..maybe your chasing two problems..I know you said it was fine beofre,,but somtimes thats how starters are,,there fine before they go bad..

ya thats what i was thinkin but... when the crank is turned to tdc, the cam is turned at the 12 oclock position with the marking link in the chain at the 12 oclock position on the sprocket with the marking dot..... does that make sense?? if it were off a link wouldnt it not line up on the cam and be at the 11 oclock or 1 oclock position when the crank is turned to the 12 oclock position ''tdc'' :dunno:  :dunno:  :dunno:  :dunno: i really dont feel like digging into the engine again!!! help!!!  :beerchug:

when you trying to start it put your hand over the carb and see if it sucking in or blowing out. If it's blowing out than your timing is probably a 180* out

if i were 180 out wouldnt it not line up?? when the crank is at 0.. tdc... and then the cam is at the 12 0clock position?? u guys get what im sayin?? when i put it at 0 on the crank the cam lines up at the 12 oclock position???? :rivers:  :dunno:   :beerchug:

Man that sucks. Hopefullys you can fix the problem and if you do Me and a bright yellow fourrunner will be up at cow mountain around 11 tommorow morning.

Uncle Jesse

Remember that the crank can be at top dead center for number one or number four and still point to the timing mark.

did you try reseting the timing try turning the dist while someone cranks it to see if it speeds up

well you mite check to see if the timing is to far advanced. that would make it crank slow and run bad. not being able to see it and hear it , it's always hard to figuer things.  :headscratch:
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

scheid6996

are u tdc on the compression stroke or exaust stroke? should B on the compression stroke, and 180 out has nothing to do with timing marks, its how u stab the disributor

check your plug wires and make sure they're plugged into the distrib. in the right order...  I've done that before  :smack:

took it apart again and the sprocket on the crank has the dot at the 6 oclock position and the cam is at the 12 oclock position... lined up the marks ect.... and put back together and still runs like :pokinit:.....  :beerchug:

Well....

A motor that has been reassembled, even if only from a partial disassembly, that turns slow is likely suffering from some sort of binding problem.  In this case the binding could be partial hydro lock as the head gasket has been replaced and therefor possibly improperly installed, thus  resulting in enough coolant getting into one or more cylinders to reduce the cranking RPM's but, not keep it from turning over completely.  This would also contribute to it "running like :pokinit:."  Pull the plugs and see what they look like and while they are out, see if it now cranks at the speed of uncompressed motor.  One or more completely clean plug would indicate a leak.  Two plugs from adjacent cylinders that are sooty black would indicate an HG leak between cylinders.  If it still turns slow then I would suspect valve train binding.

If plugs look normal and it cranks fast then I would put the plugs back in and try setting ignition timing at 0* and see what that does.  What else comes to mind is to confirm firing order.  Check the dissy cap for carbon arcing.  What does the exhaust look like?  Especially when cold?  Any back fire through the carb?  Any afterburn in exhaust?  Wanna sell it real real  :smack: cheap?

scheid6996

dude ur 180  pull it and restabit, and see wut happends, cus i bet ur way to far advanced  and when ur to advanced they turn over slow

ya i was 180 off....... ''workin till 9am from the night before aint the best idea!!'' but ya it runs like :pokinit: still but doesnt seem as bad though.... maybe my truck always turned over slowly?? i took the plugs out and turned it over and seemed to turn over the same speed.... it doesnt turn over like my 22re though...... but i think i came down to the point to take it to the shop tomorrow!! ill have yoda man check my $hit out!!  :beerchug:

draw test your starter,,that could be why its cranking slow..Maybe its on its way out..

well i think i found out why it runs like :pokinit:.. i think..... when i set it at tdc before i took it apart the cam had to go another 180*..... so therefore i turned the cam by hand ''as i remember'' 180* with the crank still at tdc.... so i think that is were i fuc#ed up.... bending a valve.... i was told it doesnt take much at all to bend it that way.... soo tonight or tomorrow im taking it off and checking it out and i hope that the piston is fine and it is only one valve!!! how i came to the conclusion of this?? there is no compression hardly in cylinder # 1!!! damn... i can fabricate really nice stuff... but i think i need to take an engine class before i tackle more engines in the future!!! by the way how much should i expect to pay to have a valve put in ect... im hopeing its only one valve and its a new head with around 5k on it sooo everything else is new!! the head will also be off and stripped down ect...??  :beerchug:

naaa not yet... i pulled the valves yesterday and yes there bent... only #1 and #4 are bent.... #4 is hardly bent... enough to lower the compression only like 10 psi... from what i remember for the compression in the 2nd and 3rd cylinder it had i think 170.... so the 4th had 160 and the first didnt even have enough pressure to move the needle!! there  oversized valves soo i hope a shop by me has them..... in this whole delema i found out the engine has.... really nice compression.... a raceing cam and some oversized ss valves......... damn... only if i had bolted the rockers down with the cam in the right position so i didnt have to turn the cam 180* with the engine still at tdc!! alll i gotta say is be careful...... they really arent that hard to bend!!! i took some pics of the valve but i still gotta post them up... hopefully the valve seat isnt messed up!! i will be checking that once i get my new valves... if the valve seat is messed up how do i go about fixing it if the laping compound aint enough?? is the tool to reface it something you can get and do it yourself or something a machine shop has to do with pecision.....in this whole process ''since i was lent a car'' i am bead blasting the engine components and painting them so assembly can be a bit nicer to do with clean stuff... tomorrow im going to go get a nice tool set from sears.... so now when i put it back together it will look perdy.. ill finally have nice tools to work with, instead of harbor freight tools... and well... ...  :beerchug:
