1981 2wd 20r fuel issue questions BUBBLES in filter
« on: Jun 18, 2015, 03:28:45 PM »
I have a mega Lego build but everything's there its a 20r with a weber short bed. Good tank, good pick up screen, was new filter. New lines from hard lines from tank to carb.  I had a good working pump on it, no issues for a month then randomly yesterday it was acting like it was out of fuel. I limped it home and put a half tank in it and still same thing starts.  Runs. Idles and will drive until it runs low on fuel I look at the fuel filter and its 1/4 full with a steam of air bubbles and fuel  coming down.  All lines except the hard line. Still getting air in filter. Took gas cap off no difference
Blew out all lines  in let, outlet, and vent lines near intake. Loosing interest in a carbed fuel system...... Any ideas

It may sound funny but double check lines going into filter, AutoZone and Napa are different, try swapping lines at filter

It just doesn't seem like the pump because the fuel into the filter is bubbly like its pulling air through

Is it hot?

Could be fuel vapor and not air.

No even on cold start .  my only other guess would be a bad hard line.   But with no visible leak it seem unlikely

With no fuel leak, the problem would be before the fuel pump.

(ever had a straw with a pinhole in it?)

Or pinhole in fuel pump diaphragm

Check oil for fuel.

I'm going to bypass the hard line and see what happens,  already dumped like 4 hr into trouble shooting and swapping stuff. All for bubbles.  The straw picture looks best.  I also thought to try putting a line in a gas jug to see if its still pulling air

Works fine, UNTIL it runs low on the tank?  Correct?

I would look at the pickup in the tank.  Swap that out, and see what happens.  Gotta be a pinhole there, thats sucking fine when covered in fuel, and then when it gets low, it starts sucking air.

Update,  so I swapped the return line for the feed line and vice versa and no bubbles. The hard line has a leak. Trucks back up doing donuts now 2wd 20r welder rear
