if the timing marks are still lined up on the cam, put it in so that the rotor points to the #1 post on the cap, that will get you close enough to start it

Yes, that's what you do as long as you're sure the #1 piston is on tdc on compression stroke.  It's easiest to not just assume it's there, just rotate the engine by hand and then line it up.

I've only done this a couple of times, but as I remember the mark on the cam gear should be positioned JUST PAST 12 o'clock. Some people think it should be AT 12 o'clock since it lines up with a casting mark on the front head bolt bracket, but actually the cam gear should have the mark pointing up just slightly past 12, like at 12:30 or so.

Also I'm pretty sure that the dissy has a tooth that is slightly longer than the rest. Find it and align it up with the mark on the dissy housing. But I never do it this way because I never get it on when I stab the dissy. So instead I pull the cap and when I stab the dissy, I hold on to the rotor and make sure that its in range with #1.

Steps for setting the timing on an engine that you just walked up to (no prior knowledge of its condition):
1) Pull spark plug #1.
2) Put crank at 0 on the timing marker.
3) Look down into cylinder #1 and ensure that the piston is up (it will be dead on either TBC or TDC because you use the timing marker to get it exactly at 0 degrees).
4) Pull the distributor cap and ensure that the rotor is in range with #1.
5) If future investigation is desired, pull the timing cover and make sure the timing gear's mark is pointing just past 12 o'clock.
6) Put everything back on and fire it up. Add Ice, Enjoy

Hey Mike, do you know if this is true or not for the 3.0 as well?? I have my truck timed, but I have no room for timing adjustment, so it seems kinda like the dizzy is a tooth off, or something along those linesĀ  :dunno: let know please

Everything would be correct except I don't know what the cam gears look like nor where they should be set at. Check with a fsm for the timing..

Im sure the distributor gear has the same longer tooth, be sure the check on that
