I am looking into getting a 72 FJ40. Never owned one or driven one. I've built trucks and runners but have yet to get into the FJs. The one I'm looking at already has a 305 with 700R4 trans. Not sure on the year of the eng/trans.
So my questions is what would you all recommend doing to it in regards to eng and trans? What will essentially bolt up with minor fab work?

My plans for it is to drive it quite often for fishing, camping and mild off road. I live in Alaska so there is alot of driving. I would like to use it to trailer 4 wheelers and snowmachines as well potentially. Trail riding will be the extent of my offroading. I've built mud runner and rock crawlers so looking to just cruise with the fam.

Any and all ideas welcome. Thanks for looking

Thanks. I'll look into that and do some research. Found an eng/trans for about 1200. Not too bad. Looking for simplicity, reliability and ease of maintenance.

If removing the intake plenum and manifold to change out a starter is "easy maintenence" then carry on with the UZ.. If your looking to run a manual on the UZ thats neither cheap if you buy adapters or simple if you plan on making your own adapters. I cant remember if the 2UZ Tundra came with a manual option...but as a package they are a cast iron block where as the 1UZ is all aluminum, also if your looking for a torquey motor they are only the same tq spec as a turbo diesel...
Have you considered the 1HD-T or the Diesel Goats tried and tested 1KZ-TE? Or even the 7MGE all of them have gobs of torque.... The HD will pull a train and are super smooth with an auto behind them....

Dayum. That's ridiculous all the crap you have to pull. Not sure if I want to go the diesel route. But then again I haven't put much thought into it. Thanks I'll research a bit

I did a 5.3 swap. real easy and lots of aftermarket support.

I also taught him how to put in 5min of hard work and then spend 15min staring and admiring what you have done...
