81 Stocker with lockers
« on: Apr 21, 2015, 07:02:51 PM »
Okay so I have myself an 1981 toyota pickup 4x4 sr5 5 speed ,that I picked up awhile back and am just finished of accummuating all my parts and I thought it would be fun to do a build thread.. And actually keep ppl updated on this one.

So I picked up a donor truck so I wouldn't have much down time on rebuilding axles.
I scrapped that truck for some extra cash and what I have left is a spare front axle and an ifs rear axle. And top shift case.

My plans for this build are gonna be very minor (somewhat)

SUSPENSION:
Ome front springs
Ome rear springs
TG shackles re drilled to adjust height
Bilstein 5125 front shocks
Bilstein 5125 rear shocks
U bolt flip kits f/r

FRONT AXLE:
Axle rebuild kit
Knuckle gussets
4.88 Yukon
Spartan lunchbox locker
Diff stud eliminator
Triple drilled flange
Stronger than stock birfs (if I have extra $)
Armor
Ifs hubs
V6 calipers
98 Tacoma rotors
Wheels spacers (if I need them)
High steer
Ifs bo

REAR AXLE:
After market shock tabs
Diff stud eliminator
4.88 Yukon
Spartan locker
Triple drilled flange
Axle rebuild
Disc brake swap using toyota only parts
Armor

Other:
Ford shock towers Cuz they keep a stock look
Single case for now stock
Tcase e brake
Long spline drive shaft (front)
And the motor was rebuilt and has approx 10,000 miles
Rear aftermarket bumper
33x10.5 big km2 on stock white steelies (if I come across some locally)
And I don't wanna cut the front valence off Cuz I wanna still keep a stock look so maybe just keep front bumper stock?

If there's anything else I might of missed out or u guys have questions please feel free to ask.
Looking to make this a sleeper type of truck. But still keep it clean and original because most people cut up these 1st gens and i wanna keep mine in good condition as much as possible.

I'll get some pics soon

I have been running the OME springs with the bilstein shocks for a couple years on my 4Runner and I daily drive it. You should be pretty happy with how it rides. Nice truck

Thanks guys I really like it.

Helipilot77 that's good to hear. It's my 3rd first gen I've owned and ran all pro 5 inch springs before and liked the ride and flex but i think for my dd and medium offroad I'll be satisfied with the ome.

I love the 1st gen sleeper build! I don't think you will have to do hi-steer with that setup if you don't want to. I kind of have a similar setup on my '80 and I am maxing out 11" stroke shocks on stock steering. I just had to remove the torque rod.  Lift is like 2" on some re-worked rears up front.  It rides great too.  I did add a huge beefy tie rod from a crossover steering setup but I never added the crossover steering because it's working so well as is.

OME springs are great to use, you'll love them!

H8Pvmnt I think I'm do the high steer since I already have it and I like strength and the clearance and the overall handlin of it. I thought about Rufs but my buddy had them on his truck and there pretty squeaky and I don't wanna have to put a new hanger or run boomerang shackles since I have all these parts from my last truck
.  I think I will be satisfied with the ome from what peoples experiences are. I appreciate everyone's input
Hope to have some progress pics up soon.

I need my diffs to be set up locally in central coast if anyone knows a good place . Last time a set them up but this time I want everything to be on point and be professionally done

Well you can't go wrong with hi-steer especially if you all ready have it.  It's so nice to have your tie rod above the springs even for mild wheeling.  Probably even more so with smaller tires.  I'm looking for ward to more pics of your build!  I dig 1st gens.

If you run the stock OME replacement on front get 2 of the passenger side it has more arch CS008FA, then put the usual 3/8" spacer on the driver side perch. This will clear high steer I've done it. I used 5" shackles, and I also redrilled and extended the perches 1 1/4" forward.

Be aware the OME 009's for the rear are stiff...good for a 4runner but in a pickup they just start to have a nice shackle angle with 900lbs in the bed. Personally I'd run longer 3rd gen OME's in the rear or maybe even F150s reversed... 009's you may have to move your shackle hanger forward.

Have you run the longer ome springs?  Any issues with the axle moving back?  I have 09s installed on my 84 and just like you describe, too stiff and no flex unless i have Alot of weight in the bed.

Yopar. I appreciate your help, I think I'll get the passenger sprigs and see how they work. I will also see about the newer Rear springs and maybe remove a leaf and switch it out with a top leaf from the old rear pack mixed in there and some longer shackles and we'll see how It goes .

Don't know what happened to my pics but I did get my rear disc brake kit in

Here's the axles clean up n painted to keep from rusting .

The spacer on axle

The rotor about to be pressed on

The rotor and studs pressed though to hold it together.

I forgot I need to get the c clips for the bearings and retainer.  I'll have more updates tomorrow hopefully . Still can't assemble rear axle completely until I have my diff together

Here's a pic of the ifs axle all cleaned up

I have not run the 51" longer ones... I'm going to use F150 for the rears and use the 009s for a RUF. But I'm pretty sure you can run the longer OME on your truck, the axle moves back by 3/8" if I'm not mistaken. I'd double check the 3rd gen rear spring measurements.

EDIT: The DRIVER side is the CS008FA it has more arch. FB has less arch because of the passenger perch being higher.

also CS009FA/FB adds a leaf they call that the "HD" spring, can always pull a leaf out...

the CS019R is the '89-94 rear spring

just wanted to clarify
