Gas Tank Rust Repair
« on: Apr 12, 2015, 02:37:07 PM »
Dropped the gas tank out of my '84 today and it's in great shape overall.  Absolutely no rust inside the tank (yay!) but there is one patch near the top of the tank where it's rusted and there are several small holes.  I've cleaned it up with a wire wheel and am thinking of etching the area with some phosphoric acid to kill any remaining rust then slather some fuel resistant epoxy on there.  Anyone done this?

Any better ideas?

You can try some JB-Weld.  But if that doesn't work, Rockauto is selling new tanks for $150.

Yeah, Id just find a new/used tank. I had great success with por15's gas tank sealer kit on my scout. I think it would fix that, but the kit costs as much as a used yota tank.

you'll probably want to seal a used tank anyway.

i've cleaned 'em out inside with jasco, that you get at home depot.

rubber plugs from the hardware store... then hang it by some bungees from a rafter in the garage, put some pebbles inside, and bounce it around... rinse and repeat.

I think you need some sort of fabric to get a fiberglass repair effect.........

I've used screen mesh fabric and epoxy to do that.

I've also heard of using POR-15 instead of epoxy  (with the fabric)
