22re wont crank
« on: Mar 31, 2015, 03:24:48 AM »
Working on fixing 89 4runner sputtered and backfires running rich. Loosened distributor and barely moved it now it wont crank. Could have thrown timing off by just barely moving it?. Also noticed that im not getting any fuel in fuel filter.  What could this be other than fuel pump.

Could be bad afm,did you jump the two connectors to rule out fuel pump. The afm sends signal to fuel pump. Also I would set motor at #1 cylinder, and reset timing

Imagine if it was already sputtering and running rich because your timing was retarded by 5-degrees. Now by barely moving it you've gone another 2 or 3 degrees and suddenly you're almost 10 degrees retarded. Definitely start with setting the timing with a timing gun properly. You at least know this must be correct so it is where I'd start with troubleshooting.

You say it won't crank after moving the distributor?  So the engine will not turn over?  Definitely something else wrong.

Otherwise, if it's turning over, do as Mike said.  You have to have a baseline to start with.  3 main things you need are air, fuel and spark.  I usually systematically eliminate each as a potential problem until you find one isn't being properly delivered or produced.

Timing was out 180degrees. Fixed it . Now it cranks but still having problem when driving bogging down when accelerating. Sluggish  and backfires. Reset codes then checked computer for codes again  got 5 codes i noticed all the codes say ECM as a cause. Im wondering if its bad.Can it be reset? Also engine was cranked and i unplugged TPS nothing happened. Could TPS be the problem. Its looking like there's no cheap way outta this one.

Sounds like you need to go thru all the sensors with a Ohm meter and the Factory Service Manual.

You can get a FSM from these guys.  For an extra $15.00 iirc, you can get a VIN specific wiring schematic.  The FSM is like over $100, worth every penny.

There are some PDF files for free online, but some are missing, and many have been taken down over the years.
