Hello all, I would like to convert my 92 Toyota base 2 wheel drive 4 cyl. truck into a 4 wheel drive truck. First is it possible, second which trans and transfer case are needed? I don't need super low gears as the most off roading it may do is the sand at Pismo beach or a mud run or two. But who knows fun is fun...

You will need front and rear axles, transmission and transfercase for a 22r, front and rear drivelines, front and rear leaf springs, front spring hanger, new steering, wheels and tires, cross member, and the ability to weld(or pay someone to weld for you).

Based on what you are wanting to do, it would be better to clean up your 2wd and sell it, then take the money from it and what you would spend in parts/labor($2-5k+) and buy a 4x4.

You might also consider just turning your truck into a pre-runner, i.e., small lift, bigger tires, re-geared rear differential w/an ARB air locker for added traction.

When did they start making the Pre-runner style 2wd?

I think most of the stuff is already there if you want IFS up front.....

:welcome: Converting a 2wd to a 4wd isnt a big deal, assuming you weld.  I have seen quite a few of them and I know two people that have done it with first gens. Wasn't the Macho Taco originally 2wd?  The fab work is mostly the same as a sas, other than that its more or less a bolt on deal. The conversion isnt a bad way to go when building a wheeler and changing/moding lots of stuff anyway. However, if all your going for can be accomplished by just buying a stock 4wd then thats probably the best way to go. :twocents:

You mean like Inferal did? The Macho Taco started as a 2wd.
Here's a good shot of all the work needed :gap:

The first generation Taco had a Pre-Runner SR5 version, it was a 3.4 X-cab w/a small lift, larger tires(taller gears I believe), and an electric locking differential.

Nope, different IFS design, the 2wd upper control arms are 8" wide whereas the 4x4 are 12", 2wd torsion bars are lower mount whereas 4x4 are upper, etc., it would be a lot of work, an SAS would be easier.
