How do you have your trailer winch mounted and why? And what would your do differently the next time around?

i am interested too! also  how are you powering it as far as charging goes? anyone charge with their tow vehicle while in route?

I have thought about buying one these job boxes and mounting the winch and battery inside with the control plug connector cut into the side:

then build a hinged shelf over the top of it so you can store chains binders etc on top.

i was thinking alos trying ti wire it into the 7th pin on the trailer connector to charge the battery off the AUX connection from the truck so it would always be charging while driving and give extra juice if winching while truck is running.

in an old electrical box on the tongue which will also hold all the tie down straps, it will be built soon, and wired to work from the tow rig power

that should depend on what you are dragging onto the trailer, mine is a 4500 lb UTV winch from Tractor Supply, the wife said it was less than $200 (christmas present lol), I have a 87 Runner and if needed I can use a snatch block to double up on the pull rate

I was thinking you could get away with a 2500 because it's not much of a pull (I currently use a come along, and it's not hard), you could double up and they're cheap...

yea with a snatch block it will be a 5000lb winch  basically

Ihave a 5k harbor freight a tv winch for mine. Just keep in mind most of the time atv winches have less line on them so snatch blocking might not be possible depending on trailer length!

The HF 2500 has 50 ft.     Enough to just be able to double the line (I have 16ft and 6ft of ramps)

I just finished the first test run with mine and it easily loaded a Honda civic and then a third gen pickup up my short ramps. running a group 31 battery with jumper cables for right now

Try one of those small solar electric fence chargers.  Should top the battery off nicely.

the real test would be to set the e brake on your wheeling rig and see if it can drag it on, incase you break on the trail to the point the truck wont roll.

I only say that because i have recovered a couple rigs with one front or one rear tire completely locked up, made me glad mine was a tilt deck and no ramps but still tough without a winch.

The pictures make it look big,     the overall length (without the lock knob on end) is 10" and the motor diameter is 3"


Some bolts thru the wood decking should do it....


And the roller fairlead is CUTE tooo

that is if your rig has a winch and it is operable. i have had instances putting trucks with rusted drums up on trailers and other people s wheeling rigs that dont have winches and had to use come alongs, just something to note

My HF 5k moved my girlfriend's civic through gravel with e brake set. I also currently have really short ramps that make for a steep angle when loading. I'll try to post up some pics of my set up for reference.

I use a dedicated tow rig anymore. Its also my DD but doesnt get wheeled, but thats for another thread

The 5k comes with a plate and has alarger pattern than the smaller winches fwiw

I run the HF 12k (picked it up with a GC I got from and ex) I have it mounted on a piece of receiver tubing with a receiver mount. My battery is hard mounted with an aux power from my truck. I want to run work lights on my trailer some day. I love the winch (for my trailer) it is a little slow but works well
