Hello, I need some advice my neighbor have a 86-87 4runner turbo for sale or trade with rebuild  transmission and turbo was rebuild to, motor run but had water on oil and he say motor are .30 over, now my question are how much value have the runners with turbo? and I see people parting out and why? I was thinking to do the trade and do head job and my free time. I'm not a mechanic and I replace the head gasket on my 84 runner I now  is lot different,  let me know if u need more info and thanks

Most part out the turbo due to not being able to solve running issues with them or costs of repairing the turbo.  However, if/when running the turbo's are worth about the same as their N/A counterparts.

As far as redoing the head, it wont be any different or harder than a stock 22re, just make sure to have the head pressure tested and resurfaced, and go with a oem turbo gasket.  I would consider having the injectors cleaned and rebuilt if they weren't done with the last rebuild.

I have used The Carburetor Factory in Sacramento in the past.  You might call 22reperformance.com in Chico to see if they do it, they have a pretty good reputation so far as engine builders.  I would think you could find a shop closer to you, maybe one in Fresno, a search here or on google should turn up some of the through the mail companies.  The shop in Sac charges about $30, but I have read here and on other forums where some of the through the mail companies do it for as low as $6/injector, then there is shipping and insurance costs as well.

The last set I did myself using this Youtube how to, it worked pretty well.  I had everything but the harness, so I just made my own.  Granted they aren't balanced, but it allowed me to see if they were working correctly, which they were, so just reused them.

I have used witchhunter several times to clean/service injectors. http://www.witchhunter.com/ I wouldn't hesitate to use them again. $22 per injector. Last time I used them I sent the 4 (2 from a junk yard) and they matched them within .9% of eachother.
If you see it, its for sale.

I've had a couple RET 4Runners and feel I've been in the minority on liking them. In comparison to the 3.0 the turbo would walk all over them. One time at the 4Runner Jamboree I made an emergency parts run to Bakersfield for a guy, on the way back going up the Grapevine on I-5 he was amazed that I was doing 85 mph w/35's and was just cruzing along. He had a 92 4Runner 3.0 and said he'd never been able to do that without pushing his motor hard on a grade like that. I've always like the turbo and even used to tow an 18' travel trailer with it. It is all in the maintenance, I'd always do a major service on it at 45,000 miles, I had them for over 250,000 miles before I sold them. Never had any issues with turbos or the motors. I'd get another one if I could. About the one and only issue was offroading, the turbo is ineffective until about 2,500 rpm so it was just like having a 22RE with an auto trans..... gutless.
