shock options 10" 12" 14" = ??
« on: Oct 01, 2014, 04:41:05 PM »
Some info:
86 T4R, 1UZ (486 lbs), 5 inch TG springs, 14” shocks, SAS.

After driving this beast around I can estimate about 3” of shocks compression for up travel. In about another 2inches it hits the bump stop. Can I put in a 12” or even a 10” to gains some clearance? I was also planning on swapping the 10” I have in the rear to the front to gain more up travel. I haven’t really wheel this rig yet since it’s a newly completed project. I just need some experience insights please?

"I can estimate about 3” of shocks compression for up travel. In about another 2inches it hits the bump stop."

Does that mean you have 5" of up travel? How flat are the springs when you hit the bump stops?

I had 5" before with the 22re, but with this swap it dropped to about 3". if i flex, in about 2" i hit the bump stop. the springs will not fully extend due to the bump stop. which is what i want... once it hits the bump stop, i have about 1" left before bottoming out.

no one here can tell you what size shock is right for your setup. you need to fully cycle your suspension and measure. With that said I would assume keeping the 14's and moving your mounts/bumps up would be the way to go. My ruf have alot less lift than a tg 5'' and I use all of a 14'' shock with 5.5'' of up travel.  Cycling and measuring is how you will find out.

Your springs need to meet the flat or 0 arch point at the same time your bump stops reach max compression. After that your shocks need to reach max compression at the same time your springs do "DURING ARTICULATION"!!!! Shortening the shock for more up isn't going to do you any good if the bump and spring wont allow it. And running your leaf springs past 0 is a quick way of destroying your springs. The length of shock should only affect the down travel of the spring and the bump should set the bump travel on the shock and spring!!!!!!!
