i was wondering if you really need a cat? i gutted mine out along time ago. i live in wisconsin so i dont have smog rules. i have 2in exhaust with magnaflow muffler and was thinking about just cutting the cat out and welding a straight pipe in because then the exhaust dosent have to go into that big opening and then small again. do you guys just think i should cut it out?

cut it out, the only reason you need that is for smog

Damn you guys suck. My cat is my best friend.

Hey Bigbadtoy- what year is your truck? If you've got two O2 sensors, one in front of and one behind your catalytic converter, then you need to have it for correct fuel adjustments.

But I doubt this is the case, so just pull it out. It's a good thing that you only have a 2" exhaust or else you would have very low backpressure and if you ever went with a larger exhaust system I bet it won't lug the same.

if ya need one , here's mine.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

Bigbadtoy

man i cut it out today and put straight pipe in its place it make it so much louder, but i dont understand how it could because a gutted cat sould be the same as no cat right. i have to put it back on tomarrow. or do you guys think i should run the 2in exhaust and magnaflow muffler with a good working cat i can get one from a buddy?
i love playin in the mud

Bigbadtoy

any one know what i should do?
i love playin in the mud

brainlessfool

well 2" is min.  yes the pipe will be loader than a gutted cat. a gutted cat still acts a little bit like a baffle in the exhust stream.
as far as to put it back, you need to smog it? if not forget it.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

Bigbadtoy

only reason i have to put it back on is because i have 3 prior exhaust fines 1 with this truck 2 with a different one. I always get snagged for exhaust whenever i have it loud. has any one tried no cat with just a regular  muffler? would it shound shitty or have a nice tone to it? just wondering

Bigbadtoy

anyone ever ran that?

Check with some of your local mechanics and/or deq if ya have one!  Cause here in Oregon, if ya take your vehicle to a mechanic shop, or muffler shop and it is not on, they will refuse to work on your rig!  And if they do and they get caught, deq can and will fine them!  A buddy of mine had a gas station that did mechanic repair with some exhaust work, and he lost his business because he worked on some rigs that had the cats removed, not by him, but the owners removed it themselves.  He got fined $5000 per offense!  If I remember right, he used to work on local government/city/county rigs, and one person noticed a couple rigs on racks and he saw no cats and made some calls!!  I want mine moved ahead some, because on my nissan the cat is right beside my transfer case, and it makes it difficult to check and fill the fluid level in it!!  Best thing to do is buy a high flow performance cat that claim no restriction on exhaust performance, check out summit racing or jeg's.  Just looked in my last jeg's and they list a cat by dynatech that increases flow by 54%, that is designed for off road applications and racing for $150.  I would go with a high flow cat and a magnaflow muffler, will give a good exhaust noise without getting ticketed, because I hate being in the hills and hearing a four banger with a blown out muffler echoing off the canyon walls, not knowing if he's right around the corner or two miles away!  Especially if it's hunting season and you got a big buck or elk sighted in and some abnoxiously loud truck comes along and ruins your day!!

On my pickup, I have the cat gutted out.  On the 4runner, I have a "test pipe" installed.  Removed cat and intalled a pipe with flanges on the ends to ease reinstallation of cat if need be.  I have been hearing lots of people getting ticketed for having a free flowing exhaust in the hills since it can't stop sparks.  Putting a real cat back in would help with this problem.

I have many buddies that run this set up and with a 2in exhaust and no cat,,flowmaster it sounds really sweet..I don't think they ever have problems with being too loud..

I'd say you got it rght with a 2in exhaust and a muffler..if its too loud i guess you need a bigger or more chanbered muffler.

He/She/It, whatever it was, never died while being tied to the grill. But there was the accident with the campfire. Poor thing never knew what hit it...
