It's all in what u want to do. Either way works. Personally offset rims work good.

what type of rims do you have? stock?

i have v6 calipers and fj rotors on my 85, but i have 2.5" bs rims and ifs hubs and spacers so i had no clearance problems.

i hear u can take a little bit of material of the caliper but it doesnt sound to appealing.

It depends on the wheel your running.  Aluminum wheels are able to be cut (machined) with more clearance for the caliper from the manufacture.  But steel wheels are not.

I have stock IFS wheels from an 86 4 runner ion a solid axle with V6 calipers and just ground down some of the 'fins' on the outside of the caliper.   Not much material was removed.    No need to buy new wheels or get spacers just to clear less than a quarter inch.
