87 4runner brake swap
« on: May 19, 2014, 08:48:15 PM »
I have an 87 runner and it still has the IFS. I want to upgrade the front brakes and have been told that I could use the rotors and calipers from a 92-95 runner. My question is, is this possible and can I still run my 15"rims? Is the rotor diameter the same or larger or is the rotor just thicker? and if these will work do I need to fabricate anything or is it a bolt on swap?

I did it on my 88 PU. I don't remember if the rotors were a larger diameter but, they were thicker. Calipers have bigger pistons than the 4 cyl  ones.

It was a bolt on deal. Had to trim the brake backing plates a little for the larger calipers. You also need to get the larger master cylinder (non ABS). What made the most noticeable improvement was going to a dual diaphragm booster.

My brakes went from scary to put you through the windshield with just light pedal pressure. Huge difference. All bolt on.

It cleared my 15 inch wheels but, I had chrome modular steel type. I have another set of steel wheels now with 3.75" backspacing and they still clear.

Plenty of threads on this subject.

 So I completed my brake swap and it is a huge improvement. Went with 93 4runner rotors and calipers. Direct bolt on, except as 2manytoys posted, I had to do some minimal backplate trimming.
Went with the 1" bore master and the dual diaphragm booster and man what a difference. No more white knuckle stopping. Just smooth and easy.
Thanks for your input 2manytoys. :clap2:
