Intermittent 22RE will not start
« on: May 01, 2014, 05:31:01 AM »
I did some searching......

Intermittently our 86 Toyota truck will not start, it has power (radio, heater, lights, exc) but will not turn over at all (no clicking, nothing). Once it does it starts fine. I replaced the electronic portion of the ignition and thought I had solved the problem. But it’s still not starting every once in a while. Last night it did it at home and I noticed the ECU(ECM) was clicking. What’s the chance it’s the ECU? Does anyone sell rebuilt/reworked ECU’s? I believe the auto & manual trans ECU’s are different, correct?
This is an 86 2X 22RE with an automatic. This is my daughters truck so I only drive it once in while, making it harder to figure out the issue.

Thanks Gary

I would replace the starter contacts, cost is a couple of bucks for parts available from almost any parts store. The hardest part is pulling the starter, but do-able at home. You might want to replace the fuel filter (not related) but easier to do with the starter already removed. The contacts are small L shaped copper parts.

I should have added (sorry) replaced starter and electronic portion of the ignition.
Fuel filter is newer.

The problem is this is intermittent (big time) and I have only had it happen once while I was around.
My daughter drives it. Last time she had an issue with it at work and went down and it fired right up.

With an automatic, I'd check the neutral safety switch.

Should be able to bypass it for testing.

x2

i had this problem in my 85 but it was a 5 speed and it would do it alot, it came without a starter relay and once i added an aftermarket one it hasnt done it since but i believe your 86 already has a relay for the starter located on the passenger fender well under the hood. might want to check this out after u check the neutral safety switch.

Thanks, I will try both and hope it works.
I need to look up what it takes to test the neutral safety switch.

My 4Runner does this here and there, sometimes an inline relay will cure the problem, sometimes not, I still have the issue. The shifter position can have a lot to do with it and since the rod runs from the trans to the shifter mounted to the body the distance can change with an old weak trans mount. I think I banged down too many times on my crossmember and bent it a little up so it pushed the rod further back. Still working on getting it right. This week I am going to install a backup push button in my dash for those times it refuses to start instead of having to jump it across with a screwdriver on my inline auxiliary relay that I installed.
