96 4runner rubbing issue
« on: Mar 26, 2014, 01:57:38 AM »
Hi all, so I have a 96 runner with a 3" suspension lift and a 2" body lift with 33s. I have already trimmed the fenders and pounded the pinch welds and yet I'm still rubbing. I see a lot of guys running 3-4 inches of lift without this issue I'm wondering what I did wrong or if there's something I missed but it's a pretty simple job. Oh and I also have 2" spacers on the wheels. Thanks for the help guys

What backspacing of wheels do you run?  I have 3.5" backspacing and I rubbed like crazy with 2.5" lift and 33's, while my buddies didn't rub much at all with stock backspacing and 3" lift with 33's.

Adding wheel spacers will also put your tire way into the pinch weld.  Firewall tub is pretty quick/easy and will solve the issue.

Where, when and how does it rub? Those 3 things would not only help us decide what is causing your rub but you may put it together yourself.

pictures of where it rubs would help.

my gut is telling me backspacing is your issue but cant tell for sure without pics.

Do you rub when the tire is straight?
Do you rub when the tire is turning but not flexing up?

I believe the 2" spacer is your issue. When you put on a spacer the radius of the tire location in relation to the fender well changes significantly when turning. You essentially have moved the outer radius of the tire closer to the fender well. Remove the spacer and see if the issue still exists.

my 17" wheels on 35's had 4.25" of backspace and no rubbing issues with aforementioned mods. Well, it did rub when flexing up hard over whoops. some have gone so far as to cut out part of the fender well and weld in a new piece of metal. I am shocked a 33 would rub with that much lift. Again, I bet its the spacer.

Thanks guys.  I finally got back to the states and was able to crawl under the truck. I think it has ATP do with a combination of both the spacer and the backs spacing of the wheel. I'll be lookin. At getting new wheels here shortly

remember to have them align your suspension with the maximum amount of caster. this will push the lower control arm towards the front bumper and pull that tire away from the firewall.

I run 285 on my taco with the lower control arm pulled forward 1.25 spacers and stock wheels. I now rub on the front factory bumper. but some chopping and sawzalling takes care of that.
