1983 Toyota SR5 4x4 w/ '97 3RZ swap
« on: Mar 22, 2014, 08:03:36 AM »
I've come to the realization that I want something a little more comfortable and conducive to daily driving since that's primarily what this truck sees. It's a super clean truck that I picked up from Northern California and drove back to New Mexico a few years ago. Being a NorCal truck, it's free of cancer that plagues these older Toyota trucks.

The modifications on the truck are pretty mild and were chosen specifically to:

1) Help make the truck a reliable commuter since it was my only vehicle for the last 4 years.
2) Be "relatively" fuel efficient, and function at modern freeway speeds.
3) Capability to get into remote backcountry areas to facilitate my outdoor hobbies.

I've driven the truck across country while seeking out adventure and to serve as my sole transportation. It's utterly dependable - without question it gets me wherever I've wanted to go. The truck is not "perfect" but is far cleaner than 99.9% of the examples  you'll ever come across. I get complimented almost daily on the truck. I'm going to miss it.

As stated, the truck is a clean 99.9% rust free California truck. Frame is completely rust free and so is the cab. The bed has one small pin hole in the upper passenger side corner at the seam (see pictures). Originally an SR5 trim truck, the original seats have been replaced with some '90's Honda Accord seats adapted to the stock sliders so the original floorpan is unmodified. Aftermarket carpet kit is in decent shape although I made a small cut in error around the shifter. But the carpet really helped the comfort of being in the cab for long drives. Engine is a '97 3RZ which was swapped in with a '91 W56C transmission. The wiring is clean and completely integrated into the truck. No rats next of wires. Very clean.

Modifications:

Drivetrain:
'97 Toyota Tacoma 3RZ Engine
'91 Toyota W56C Transmission
BudBuilt Crossmember
Tom Woods double cardan driveshafts front & rear
Addicted Offroad 4.88 differentials - Rear has Yukon Locker
Timken Bearings throughout axles front & rear
Marlin Crawler seals throughout axles front & rear
1.5" Wheel spacers front & rear
Pro-Comp steel wheels (can't remember backspace)
Goodyear Kevlar MT/R (need replaced soon)

Suspension:
Sky's Offroad front spring hanger
'83 RUF w/ OME leave added
OME poly bushings
Sky's offroad boomerang shackles
Sky's 63" hanger kit
1995 Chevy 63" springs
Bilstein 5125 12" stocks front/rear
Marlin Crawler front shock hoops

Armor:
Addicted Offroad front bumper
Custom rear bumper

Lighting/Electrical:
Hella E-Code H4 headlights, rewired through relay direct from battery
Hella FF500 driving lights
(4) Carling rockers
 - Offroad lights
 - Rock lights
 - Blank - wired to trigger ECU to idle up and turn on A/C compressor for OBA
 - Blank - unused
Reverse lights wired to trigger anytime transmission is in reverse regardless of ignition position (great for area lighting when camping)

That should pretty much cover the extent of the modifications.

What you should know (i.e. the bad):
The rearward intake valve for the #3 cylinder is showing some wear. The valve clearance is a bit tight on that valve and the smallest shim Toyota makes for the 3RZ is installed so it's going to have to be addressed at some point. At this time, the truck runs fine and I'd honestly have no issues driving it any distance required to get back to wherever you need to go, but be aware that it'll need addressed sooner or later.

The truck has no other issues that I'm aware of. It's been my sole transportation for the last 4 years and has never once left me stranded or failed to get me where I wanted to go. It's an extremely capable vehicle that has no problems traveling 75mph down the interstate with one finger on the steering wheel, or traversing some serious terrain should you need to get somewhere remote. I feel it's an amazing truck that is well suited for any and all uses, which is what makes this truck special in my opinion.

$7500

I'll deliver it anywhere in the Southwest if need be.

You might ask, "What will it take to get SMOG certified in CA?"

My reply, "I bought the truck bone stock.

As to get it Cali certified here's my honest assessment as to what would have to be done.

1) Exhaust would need reworked. The cat is a general aftermarket replacement which from what understand isn't up to California standards. So it would likely need a new cat. The placement is probably not going to fly for Cali standards as it's in the stock '83 location protected under the crossmember. From what I understand they want it in the Tacoma location which would require the front portion of the exhaust reworked. Not terribly difficult.

2) Needs to have the EVAP system connected. I currently have omitted it as it's not required for proper function of the motor, just emissions. But the gas tank is plumbed for it, and the line is ran into the engine bay. In all honesty, the EVAP could be easily added with little effort. All that would be needed is some vacuum hose.

3) EGR would have to be reinstalled. I have the valve and the hardware. Simply remove the block off plates and replace with the EGR system. The only item that you'd have to source is the EGR Temperature sensor. I imagine you could find one relatively cheaply, and it simply screws into the intake manifold.

That's it as far as I can tell. The OBD-II system is fully function an the only codes the truck throws are for the EVAP since it's not currently installed. The "Fasten Seatbelts" light is being used for the CEL. So I don't believe it is out of the question to have this made to be a California Compliant swap."
