What is this 1980 pickup worth?
« on: Feb 22, 2014, 01:10:22 PM »
Hey guys, not a regular over here. Spend most of my time on the cruiser forum. I'm looking to get a first gen pickup to DD. can anyone give me an idea of what this truck is worth? I'm not going near their asking price on CL. thanks!

If it runs and isn't all rusted out in the frame and other places.  $3500 is a bit much.  But the value of Toyotas goes thru weird cycles.  Sometimes you find them cheap all day long.  And a couple months later, they are worth more than gold.
Miss ya Dean (4THEWKN) & Kyle (KYOTA)!!

where are some problem areas to look for on the frame? Is surface rust much of an issue if I plan on coating in POR-15? I am going to look at it on thursday, any pointers would be great!

Don't know much about rust, I live in cali. But what I tell friends looking to buy toyotas to ask about are timing chain replacement and not if but where it leaks oil.
If I had to guess I'd say it's been sitting for awhile, check for leaks before and after its been running.
around here that would be 1500 - 22ish

For some reason toyotas are pricey in south texas. I looked for quite a while to find mine, and had to drive 5 hrs to get it. If you could get this one for $2000 I'd jump on it.

Thanks for the tips. I think I will be able to pick it up for sub 2k. It was for sale a few months ago and was listed for 2,000 but sold before I could get out and look at it. I'm 99% sure its the same truck, and if it is I will start at 1,200 and go from there. When I spoke to the first owner I THINK he said it was a refreshed 20R, or he said he had a spare to go with it... I can't recall exactly.

From what I can see there are a few things it will need. Where can I get:

Passenger exterior mirror
both side markers that are on the front fender
lights that go next to the headlights? running lights? IDK what they are called.

I would like to put in a sliding rear window instead of the solid glass. I guess I'll just look in the junkyards?

Is there anyway to tell what condition the floor boards are in without pulling the vinyl up?

This year has 4.37's right? Will I be ok putting a 31" AT on it? are there factory 4.88's that will fit this truck, or do I need to source different axles?

You'll be fine with 31s, 4.88s are about perfect for a 33" tire. Start an ad in the wanted section, people tend to stockpile parts around here... oh yeah :welcome: to 1st gen addiction and good luck.

Check your floorboards by looking underneath the cab. Pick n pull in San Antonio has a couple 1st gens but they've been picked pretty hard

I don't have major plans for this truck (yet). I would like to finish my 80 series before I start on this. I figure this will be a cheap way to get a commuter that is still capable of light duty offroading/camping. Plus I might be able to get out more when my gas mileage doubles ;)

That thing is rough!  If it runs substantially better than it looks, it'd be worth maybe $1500-1800 here, but it always depends on what the prospective buyer is willing to pay.

RIP KYOTA

You can go through life being scared of the possible, or you can have a little fun and tease the inevitable.

Give a man venison, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to hunt Blacktail, he'll be frustrated for life!

Looks decent to me. Mine was way worse when I started. I haven't seen to many mint 1st gens around here. Either they end up on a deer lease like mine was, or the Mexican cartel gets them

First gens are getting hard to find, but have seen more pristine examples go for less than 2k.   A solid rust free bed is worth a good bit though.

well, tomorrow is the big day. I'm pretty excited to go look at it. I think I'll take 1,800 cash and have that be my max amount I'll spend. Wish me luck fellas!
