I am new to rock crawling. However I do have a little mechanical ability. My ride I have just purchased is a well used tube buggy that has Toyota running gear with dual t case's. The rear case is leaking from the rear section of the case behind the front drive shaft output. Whats confusing me is that all the Toyota cases I have seen are solid cast in this area however this case has an 3in opening behind the front drive shaft output. And it looks like there is a tin cover pressed into the bearing opening, it looks like a small paint can lid? Is this a PTO output? I cant find anything on line and the previous owner went to his local Toyota dealer and they had no idea. Sorry I can not post a pic this is my first post and apparently i need 10 more to post attachments.

bkuknyo,

Yes Sir, you have what we call a "Type 5" RF1A gear drive t/case that has the uber rare PTO option. Take a look here for more info about it: http://www.marlincrawler.com/tech/transfercase/transfer-case-bible

Congrats. Now hang on to that sucka  They are more common outside of the US.

BigMike

I have posted this on the tranfer case section and I attached a pic. Well after further looking you can see what appears to be dope leaking but it is actually jb weld. It or shall I say the paint can lid is jb welded to the case! Wow now what? And of coarse its leaking. I have anotner case I am going to switch it with if this one cant be fixed. Check my otner post and verify this is a pto case.

Ok sorry, I re-read this part more carefully (I actually skimmed right over this originally),

behind the front drive shaft output ... cover pressed into the bearing opening, it looks like a small paint can lid?

...and I have to say that I've never seen anyone do this before. This is NOT a Type 5 PTO case. Sorry for the confusion. I'll see if I can find a picture of Marlin's PTO case for reference...

We scrap a lot of these transfer case housings (housing #3) and pull out the metal dowel pins as well as pop out that front output gear cage bearing. We built a jig that holds the case while a swift blow of a hammer pops a hole right through the case where you have that large freeze plug installed.

So it looks like someone serviced the cage bearing -- which is not serviceable as far as I know -- by breaking the case, and then carefully machined it so that they could fit a large freeze plug in there. That is the strangest thing I've ever seen to these gear drive cases and I've been around them for a long time.

If you are planning to tear your case apart to do any work, let me know. If you'll willing to pay for shipping and $5 for our time, then we'll send ya a good housing #3 with a good used cage bearing. Whoever did all that work on that case really stepped over about fifty quarters to pick up a dime.

BigMike

Wow. It looks like I will be swapping that one out I have another I just picked up. But all the fill and drain plugs are all messed up and I guess I will file the shift rod on the crawl case while I am at it. Thanks for your input.

bkuknyo

Well you right. Send the info so I can get a new case as you mentioned
