Check for bent valves
« on: Dec 16, 2013, 05:35:39 PM »
Timing chain broke driving on dirt road this weekend. I'm hearing the 86 22r is an interference engine. Any chance of getting lucky, or should I just go ahead and pull the head off and check it out.
If this is a repeat of a similar topic I apologize.

You can do a compression test. If all the cylinders pump up right you don't have a bent valve.

A bent valve wont close all the way and will not build compression.

Take off valve cover and look at all your valve springs to see if one is stuck down. Also you can turn engine over by hand and feel if piston touches anything

Well looks like something is wrong, when turning the engine there seems to be very little compression. I reckon I'll pull the head. Lets see how this goes. On the bright side I have another engine, but it's fuel injected. Now contemplating switching over since Im getting this deep.

With it being an interference engine, you are all but guaranteed to have bent valves.  They may not be bent enough to stick open/closed, but there will be bent ones nonetheless.  You will be better off just pulling the head have it checked/resurfaced and rebuilding it.

I love Exhaust manifold work such a pain in the Rumpelstiltskin!
You know I didn't have any bolts break on me. Right EEEEE OOO! Oh well I'll fix that too while I'm at it.

FSM lies, there is more than six bolts holding the timing cover on. Head is off now, found a bunch of plastic in the oil pan. Now to fix it all up and get her back together.

Plastic in the pan. That would be what was you chain guides and tensioners. You should be able to fix that head and bolt'er right back on. Some new gaskets and timing chain stuff and your on your way.     :driving:

Sounds easy don't it. :yesnod:

Now for major cleaning of stuff and lap in some new valves if guides are ok. Should have it going soon. It's not that hard, just time consuming to get everything cleaned up and put back together. But on the bright side I'll be good to go for a good while hopefully.
