What are your coolant temps?
« on: Dec 06, 2013, 09:57:03 PM »
I am having a hard time getting much heat in my cab. My coolant temps only run about 190 and I have all but a 6 inch square blocked of to my radiator.

Funny how much time I've spent getting it to run cool on the trails and now I need it to run hotter.

I am going to check my thermostat and maybe put some inner fenders back in it for the winter. Prolly should block off the hood vents also. It's been way too cold to be worrying about cab heat.

i think your problem is most likely a obstructed heater core. it could be plugged up internally,  externally or both. if you have A/C that can get plugged externaly aswell. my truck runs at a constant 180* the outside temp was about 30* today and my heater was more than sufficient infact i had to turn it off a couple times. i had next to no heat in my truck untill about 2 months ago when i changed the core. not only was the core somewhat restricted internally the heater and A/C core where both externally plugged with junk. another thing to check is that the hot/cold valve is working and also be sure theres no air in the core. had a hell of a time getting the air out of the core until i figured out a little trick. i dont think its a good idea to try and make your motor run hot.

Thanks.... Maybe I will try to back flush the heater core before I do anything else.

Make sure the heater control valve is opening all the way.

this is definitely worth a try.  though in my case half the problem was crap externally plugging the fins of the heater and A/C cores wich can only be cleaned up by removing them from the truck. so remember that is a possibility. after you flush it i suggest adding one of those prestone T fittings just to the right of the hot/cold valve making the fitting the highest point in the system. remove the radiator cap and pour coolant into the fitting until the radiator overflows, and last burp the system. repeat if needed. this is the best way iv found to get the air out.

I have already checked the heater control....It is working well.

If back flushing don't help I'll go ahead and pull the core out to see if the fins are clogged. I don't have AC but the truck sat for most of a year so mice may have built a nest in there.

I like the burping technique, I have had the radiator out a couple of times, Air pocket could be the culprit.
