My used Toyota buying rant.
« on: Nov 02, 2013, 06:58:58 AM »
Seriously!! WTF is going on with used Toyota prices these days. A used 88 4x with 250k and half worn Chinese Goodyear Duratracs 4500$ People are F"ing crazy. Evidently you take the actual value and multiply it x 2.75 and then add a 10% dumbf#ck tax to it. Am I the only one that has noticed this? Or is this inflation? And since when is 150k low miles? People need to get their heads out of their asses. Yeah 22r/es are great motors but evidently these people dont know what a rattling timing chain sounds like.  And one last thing!!! Wash your F"ing truck before you post it on Craigslist! The last thing I want to know is that you wheeled the piss out of it on a weekly basis JACKASS.

I get offered 3k+ regularly for my stock Toyota trucks. They are worth it. They are only going UP in value also. Because they are being taken out of country or chopped up and turned into crawlers.

Don't like the price. Don't buy it. Don't be mad when in 5 years they are 6k instead. O well you can go buy a Cherokee for the 800 bucks your looking to spend and put 5k into it getting to to where a stocktoyota is.

The whole cash for clunkers killed the cheap Toyota, 2 or 4wd.  I'm sick of the rigs that are so beat up, and they still want $$$$ for them.  The only cheap Toyota you can find today is the 3.0 Runner.  I've thought about getting a 3.0 and doing a 3RZ swap in one.

I understand your frustration.

Sparkplug..... First of all Ive owned several Toys and am very aware of what they are worth and what they are capable of. 3 grand for a descent stocker  is fair in my book. But i will be damned if Im gonna give some one 5gs for a beat up piece of junk. The whole thing just pisses me off.  And by the way...I will walk before I buy a cherokee. Or anything else that isnt a TOYOTA!

it is pretty ridiculous, but you can find awesome prices if you look around.... and barter...... if someones price is too high, they might just figure it out when it sits for 6 months... and if they are in a hurry to sell it, money talks

I would have to agree with the idiocy of some of the prices, especially the ones that are beat to hell or the ones that people think they should get what they put into them/what they would be worth in parts.  However, with the type of 2nd/3rd gen Toyota's available, it is hard for the average seller to list theirs accordingly.  $4500 is a bit high for a 2nd gen if it doesn't have clean straight sheet metal/interior/paint, and doesn't have a some mods like bumpers, larger tires. regeared, etc.

150k is considered low mileage for Toyota's, hell most consider them just broken in at 100k, especially if they were treated like an investment and not like a disposable commodity.  If they have been maintained, 300k is about where they start to be considered high mileage.

I paid 2500. for my 4Runner 4 years ago and have noticed that they are now climbing in value and collectivity. In fact I recently read an article that they were starting to garner FJ40 status and will start to appreciate instead of depreciate which is why I'm not cutting mine up and making a crawler out of it. I would imagine the related truck would also get the same treatment too.

Your all correct. Five years ago, my wife gave me a $500. limit to buy any Toyota P.U. Sorry to say, There are none left at that price. (not even 3.0 Runners) Land Cruisers around here start at $10,000 for FJ40's. Why do people like Toyotas so much?

The worst is when you have no money, and Cl is full of killer deals.  Right now in the Portland, OR Cl, there is at least 10 second gens, all within the $1000 - 2500 price range.  And all of them have some killer potential.    :rivers:

Not sure about the '88 market.

But, I think $4500 for a moderate condition '85 4Runner 22RE, Manual would be a steal.

It took me about 3 years to find one that wasn't a complete POS.  I definitely paid a premium for it.

Last year for SA, first year for 22RE.....FTW :best: :best: :best:

How do you know they are all going to Mexico? I know a guy who is local that exports about 8 yotas a year, but they all make it to Guatemala.

what i want to know is how are all the toyota's ending up in the junk yard? my go to yard seems to get 5-10 79-88 yota's every month. not to mention newer ones. ive seen two real nice stock first gen runners  get crushed in the last two months. they let people have there way with em for about two weeks then off to scrap. makes me sick. iv also noticed they only get 1-2 jeeps  a year. im thinking conspiracy!

What I am told is the Cartels love them for transporting drugs, most parts are interchangeable so if on the road one breaks they just use parts from old junk.

RUST is where all the ones up here have gone.  There are tons of them here at reasonable market prices but they are totally rusted to :pokinit:.  I've seen some good deals on ones that won't pass the state safety inspecions.  There was one last week locally, an 88 regular cab 22re 5 speed with only 130,000 miles for $500 cuz the frame rusted in half and it wouldnt pass inspection.

Maybe I should work out a deal with someone out west, you send me non rusted bodies and frames and I could ship out low mileage drivetrains!
