Cool! Despite what everyone says, the 3.0 is a good engine if you rebuild it and take care of it. But of course the 3.4 will blow it away. How long have you owned the 4Runner? I have three very close friends who wheel 2nd gen 4Runners. They are my 2nd favorite 4Runner body style :beerchug:

Try and find the non U.S. head gaskets, that is the whole problem with them. When asbestos was banned Toyota had to scramble and come out with a different set of gaskets, they are not as good as the gaskets that were originally planned for the 3.0's. This is also why pre-90 3.0's don't seem to have the problem.

Ill have to look for some non U.S. head gaskets and i just picked up the runner.

RS, are there any all-metal high performance aftermarket head gaskets available? TRD? Blitz? HKS? Cometic?

Okay so I have a question. Im putting a manual tranny in my runner and it came with an automatic. Will I have to change anything with the computer?

I'd like to reply to your question with a question: How attached are you to this 4Runner? Have you considered selling it and instead build up one that already came with a manual transmission?

I would imagine there are but I'd still prefer the type that were originally in the engine design. Had one go in the 91 back in 93, Toyota ended up replacing the whole engine since the block would no longer seal with a steel gasket. The leak was very slight and put a good notch on the deck over time that couldn't be fixed. Last one I ever want to deal with.

My advice is to sell it and get one that already has a 5 speed. This isn't to say it can't be done, but rather it's a lot of extra work that you wouldn't have to do. There are only so many 2nd gen 4Runners around so leave that one for someone who actually wants an auto and build one starting with a manual version. :twocents:

Have you checked any of your local wrecking yards? Do you need front and rear? If front then look for 1979-1985 4WD models, 1984 & 1985 being the best of the bunch. If rear and if you are going to run leafs, then look for 1986-1995/(96 4Runner), non ABS axles. Another excellent option is 1995-2004 Tacoma rear axles which are 60" wide instead of your stock 58.5" wide axle. This will help keep your glass away from trees. Your 4Runner has coil rear suspension so if you're looking for a direct replacement then you'll need to find another 1990-96 4Runner rear axle.
