I have been thinking of adding air conditioner to my 89 4runner. It came from factory with no a/c. Anybody got any advise? Is there a good complete add on kit or would it be better to try and find used factory parts?

I bought a factory kit from a dealer MANY years ago for an 87 that didn't have A/C. Everything bolted in place and all the electrical plugs were there behind the dash. Had to put two holes in the fire wall and they were already semi punched through. Kind of a dented area. Super easy. Just had to install, add oil, evac and charge.

The non A/C truck had a plastic spacer that bolted in behind the glove box where the A/C goes if you had A/C. You had to remove the spacer and bolt in the A/C unit in it's place. The two holes I mentioned were right in front of it for the lines to go through.

If you could still get a dealer kit I would check into it. Probably not cheap. If not, I would go to a salvage yard and find a complete system that was hopefully working from the same year truck.

A factory AC should bolt right in......

When I got my 86, the dealer added the factory air........

Might be able to pull a complete system from a junk yard.    Not all the pieces may be good, but you'll at least know what all the parts are.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking factory air would be the way. I will check into it and see if it is still available.

If not you can collect the parts from junkyards, just get all the bolts, brackets and wiring.

Anyone know what the going rate for a complete system is, roughly? Dealership or junkyard? Or how about this, what you SHOULD pay for a complete system?

I have not had time to track down parts and get prices. My trans just started going out and I have been tring to track one of them down. I am curious of how much someone would have invested as well.
