Crankshaft pulley bolt
« on: Jul 07, 2013, 03:19:35 PM »
Is the bolt on the crankshaft pulley left handed thread or normal? I can't seem to get it to spin either way. Am I doing something wrong. it is the main bolt right in the center of the pulley. I have the motor stopped from turning with a crow bar on the flywheel bolts but the bolt is not budging please help :help: this is on a 20r. I don't want to shear it off either.

Right hand.

Some people use a long breaker bar, rest it on the frame and bump the starter to loosen it. Make sure to pull the coil wire if you use this method.

Another person I know could not get his loose no matter what he did; he ended up slicing pieces out of the flange on the bolt. Then it spun right off.

I had to do the same thing to one of the cam bolts on my 3.0.

It isn't to important, I was just going to replace the timing chain cover gasket I thought it was the leak but ended up being the power steering pump. So I just re torqued all the bolts and am just going to run it after I get the new pump. I would have used the starter method, but here is no tranny and no flywheel so therefore no starter  Thanks for the reply though. If it has a leaky gasket oh well, I am having a 20r being built by shark racing engines right now so a little oil is not a big deal. http://www.sharkracingengines.com/about%20us.htm They specialize in sprint car engines but will build pretty much anything. Its going to be sick :booya:

I have had great success heating the end of the bolt up with a propane torch.  Get it nice and hot, maybe 10 minutes with the torch.  It's about right when you can burn your finger bad enough on it that it sizzles and quits hurting quickely because it killed the nerve endings in your fingertip. Then use a big breaker bar or cheater pipe on your 1/2 inch ratchet and you should be able to break it loose.

I don't think the finger test is really necessary but that seems to be about the right temperature.

i use the starter method to loosen it, if its off the truck already and an impact won't work, i use a chain wrench (hasn't failed me yet after 5 times)
