Hello everyone! Just bought a 81 shortbed off of Craigslist for $2500. I'm new to forums as well as building. Any advice and info would be great. I'm 27, married, live in NM, and always had an obsession with toyotas. The 81 I bought has had some work done already but nothing too major. It has a few mods on it like a weber carb, 3 inch lift, 33s, roll bar... Nothing intense. Definitely did not gear it because it is laggy.  I am curious about the transfer case though. It had a marlin shift knob but I don't know how to tell if he didn't just buy the knob cus it looks cool. Any simple way of checking? Anyways I appreciate any help and suggestions.

Likely just bought the knob.  How clean is the t-case compared to the transmission?

He is right if someone had actually put a Marlin T-case in it, it would look a lot cleaner than the transmission. You probably have just the knob, nothing else.
P.S Welcome to the forum, lots of good ideas and information here. :welcome:

Thank you for all your welcomings. Yeah the t case is a little dirty(wet) compaired to transmission. Yeah these forums have been my go to for any problems and research.

My battery light came on after I changed the alternator and checked the regulator. Any other reason it could be on? Battery only a year old. Starts and runs fine. I'm gonna try to tighten the alt. belt.

If it is dirtier/older looking than teh transmission, that would be a good indication it is a stock t-case.

The battery light is usually an indicator the charging system is failing, check the voltage at the batter with the engine running, the volts should be about 14 if the alternator is charging correctly.  Also, test the drop in volts over night, it shouldn't be much if drop, if any at all.

Before I got the truck my voltage gauge was reading below 10. After the repairs mentioned it reads 14 strong. Never dips. The light turned off today, but came back on after sitting for a few hours. I'll swing it by a friend that can get a second reading. Could the battery have been damaged from a bad alternator/regulator?

If you have an autozone or equivalent they can check the charging system for free.

My 79 does the same thing but the whole charging system has been replaced, it will do it if I touch or wiggle the "gauge" fuse under the dash, my fuse panel is shot  The prongs are mostly all broken. So check that when the truck is running it could be the problem.

Unfortunately I haven't had the time to fiddle with it. But that sound like it could be the issue. My lighting system wasn't working properly, but a mechanic was able to locate a faulty wire and it fixed the problem. The whole wiring system is a mess from PO, tried to wire so many things I think he gave up after getting too deep. Roll bar lights are half connected, speakers and radio is a mess, aforementioned tail, brake, and dash lights, and more than likely something with the fuse box that keeps turning on the charge battery light. I will let you know as soon as I find the problem though! Thanks for checking in on me :therethere:
