I was wondering if driving around town without doors is street legal??? If its legal for Jeeps and Scouts and Cruisers is it legal for trucks?

i'm pretty shure you just need to have a drivers side mirror...mount it to the fender or something.
i also think the door lip has to be above a certain height...not too shure about that one.

give it a shot if they did pull you over they would probally just give you a warning and worst case a fix it ticket. me and my brother never got pulled over in his old pickup for not having doors

I drove doorless a lot last summer, I heard a mix of answers from that question. Never did find the CVC for it but someone said the diff is a jeep has a "lip" a truck does not. I never got pulled over though.

I think the law is you must have a drivers side and a rear view mirror or you die.

Actually I believe you only need on rear mirror.  I know i have drove right past a cop with no doors and he just gave me a funny look but never followed

For doors (in California), I asked a cop and phoned the local CHP station and BOTH said it WAS street legal. If you do get a ticket, they would have to give you the vehicle code you broke. Since they couldn't find one on doors, they might give you some misc B.S. ticket for unsafe something. Just make sure you have mud flaps, this seems to be going around lately.   :driving:

For mirrors, you need 2.. either 2 side mirrors or one side and one rear view mirror.

And the one mirror you must have (in either case) is the drivers side mirror. (ex: you cant have a rear view and passenger mirror only)

I'm not going to read all that legal crap but I do know that there used to be a requirement that there be a lip of 3 or 4 inches up from the floor board to keep stuff from rolling out. Look at Jeeps & Cruisers.

So you're going to perpetuate a possible myth because you're too lazy to read and find out? The gunnel of CJ and LC tubs could easily be a DESIGN requirement and not a legal one.

I think that is one of those things that get passed around but I don't think there is a code, atleast I could never find one..

I ran around in my datsun in HS with no doors and the cops told me I needed a lip on top of the door sill to keep loose junk inside the cab.  Granted I found out later about needing to have the stock hinges, door latch and a bar to keep you from just falling out but I do think that somewhere along the line that will help shut up the cops.

Yea me neither, that's why I didn't bother looking again. There was reference to it years ago but it's in the way it was written that left it up to interpretation. & ntsqd YGFY

I have asked about this alot with the local yokals, county mounty's....never did get a straight answer, other that they probably would not pull you over just for that.  I finally got a hold of the highway patrol person that is over state saftey inspections..... to pass you need: Mirror, a door latch that works and is not hidden. this applys to all vehicles...even jeeps. That is the only reference to doors in the utah code that he could find. So In utah...half doors are technically legal and no doors are technically illegal. But the consensus seems to be that you are not going to get pulled over for it, truck, heep, scout, whatever.
You have a Jeep?  That's cute.... So does Barbi.

Well to answer my own question... Yes it is street legal.  Just called the local CHP and Police Dept. and both said its street legal but kinda  :hahaha: dangereous :talkingn: , But In California it is street legal to drive around without doors.

last 2 summers I ran around all summer (minimum of 5 months) with no doors. That included a trip up north near the Rubicon. I picked up a cheap $10 mirror from Kragen that bolts to your fender just right and as far as law enforcement was concerned, I was legal. (I know, I sat next to a few @ stop lights) I did however have a buddy who got tagged for no doors and they stated the no lip thing. If you look at both Jeeps and 'Cruisers, they both have about a 3" lip. My buddy didn't intend to put the doors back on so he welded on a 3" strip and got the ticket signed off. I think it really depends on where you live and how hard the cops "want" to find something wrong. If they really want to find something wrong, they will.

Isn't all of this kind of OBE?  Jeeps, cruisers, Broncos, etc drive around all day without 'doors'!
Some idiots are too busy knowing it all, to ever learn anything...

Im going to be taking my doors off all this summer, dont have AC so whats the point of keepin the doors on. Gotta get that nice breeez, Does anyone have some pics on how to make your door hinges quick release? And fred, sense the cops around here have nothing better to do but give me fix it tickets at their every chance, when you put that mirror on did you drill holes in your fender or what?

You will be ass raped in Moses Lake if you drive without doors.  I got popped last week for my bumpers being too high, my tires too far outside the body (no flares), and my address was wrong on my license.  Moses Lake is situated right on I-90 and a main N/S hiway called HWY 17.  Lots of state patrol float through here and will get you everytime.  I would rather pay the dumb tickets rather that fix my stuff.  I have been popped for no windshield...because I didn't have wipers...thats gay.  A cracked windshield, no flares, no mudflaps, too many stickers, monster tach partially blocking my vision....The state guys are real hard asses.  The county and city guys are looking for drugs or drunks.

Damn, I though I had it rough with just my "no mud flaps" thing.
Glad I dont live in WA!

Nope it's a cool mirror that is secured with 2 set screws that just tighten down to the fender. Again I got mine @ Kragen and it worked perfect. On the hinge thing, I cut the pins that hold the 2 parts of the hinge together and just pull them out (a little more difficult than that) Be careful about the brass bushings as they are somewhat fragile. Then I got I think a 5/16 Steel pin that is drilled for a clevis pin on the end.(got mine from National Hardware in Pine Dale near Costco) The steel pin holds the 2 halves of the hinges together and the clevis pin keeps it from slipping out. Cost all of $10 and took me about an hour only because the original pins are a PITA to get out.

washington isnt that bad at least not around sumner, i get pulled over a few times every month for no mud flaps, no rear bumper, cracked windshield broken tailights, no front plate and other dumb stuff but they keep giving me warnings which is pretty cool. hope my luck stays up, i cant afford to fix all that crap. a couple years ago when i had my lifted s-10 blazer i got pulled over for doing 55 in a 35 but the cop let me go with a lecture and a fix it ticket for no mud flaps or fender flares

Hey MiniSimp, I've been running 35s now since December without mud flaps (central CA) and I've not gotten anything yet. I dont even have any bumpers either. But I know one of these days I'm gonna get it :nerv: Gotta get some flaps on
