Speedo cable dun got broke...

So here's the deal, I spent the last 5-6 weeks building my 87 SR5 4-runner with a good friend of mine "finishing" it just days before driving it from Anchorage, Ak to Cheyenne, WY for school. I had purchased Sky's disc parking brake and was pretty pleased with it until I started to drive with it. For anyone who ends up buying one of these I highly recommend that you replace all the nuts with nylock nuts because I lost two even after checking all the hardware every 150 miles. Since there are no hardware stores on the side of the road driving through Canada I wasn't able to fix it until now. Anyway, that's not a big deal. But this is, one of the 25 times I climbed under to tighten up those bolts I pushed the speedometer cable out of the way and it came undone at the extension. I screwed it back on thinking it was no big deal until I started driving again and realized that I was going 0 MPH at 3,600 RPM. So I stopped again to check it out and the little key that slides into the extension broke off. I still have it but don't know if this is something I can repair or if this is something I have to replace. I don't really want to spend a day finding a junkyard in a city I'm not familiar with and ripping apart my whole dash and replacing the cable. If this has happened to someone please help.

Your cable is broke ive broke about 3 or 4 in my 2wd yota breaks them off where they go into the transmission. you have too just go find another one or drive around without one.
i just replaced myne again last week when you get another one lube it by spraying oil down the cable and try too get it too soak into the cable soo its lubed too where it will work good and not break again
