1986 4Runner Sound Deadening of Cabin
« on: May 11, 2013, 11:06:08 AM »
I'm sure everyone here is annoyed when driving down the highway at high speeds and not being able to speak with your passengers. So I started looking around for sound deadening media and came across this stuff from Thermotech (http://www.thermotech.com). I went ahead and purchased 3 sheets of the 36 x 60 inch adhesive backed sheets (pn: 14620). I got the stuff knowing it was going to be a pain to gut the interior of the cabin... and it was. I went ahead and washed out the floor pan of the cabin with a damp clothe and mild neutral soap just to de-grease the surface to get better adhesion of the acoustical sheets. I then proceeded to layout my acoustic sheets and cut them to size, I tried to keep the sheets as whole as possible to avoid having many small tiles for the floor pan. I got away with making 3 large floor tiles and they 4 more filler tiles for around the transmission hump that is in the cabin.

To get the sheets to bond to the floor pan well I used 2 pounds of rice in a 2 pillow cases and proceeded to pound the crap out of the acoustic sheet to get it to stick to all the contours of the floor pan.

Looking back I dont think I would have gone with the adhesive backed acoustical sheets, I should have just gone with the sheets you throw down and dont stick to the surface or maybe I should have just peeled away at the corners of the sheet.

Here are some more shots from the next day where I started to layout the acoustical sheets:

I did the rear floor pan first and worked my way up to the pilot and co-pilot floor pan.

Can you peel them off around the mounting points of where the seat brackets bolt down?

The reason I'm asking is that I just had to weld down mine because the factory spot welds broke...... and now would be a good time to re-enforce the spot welds....

I'd at least run a welding bead at the intersection of the front mount and outer frame rail at the door.......

What is everybody sensitive on the noise coming through their floorboards?   And need to insulate it?
I have bare floorboards and its quiet.  I just did a 800 mile round trip, and the only noise I hate is the wing windows and the mirrors create a whistle that bugs me.
Miss ya Dean (4THEWKN) & Kyle (KYOTA)!!

I need to cut down on the heat coming up. I had to do alot of cutting to fit my new tranny and duals so it is not totally sealed. Some kind of liner will cover and seal the seams from the tunnel work and cut down on heat more than noise and any fumes that may occur.

made my buddys 85 sound like a new truck. It was ni e and quiet inside and keeps all the heat out when driving around in triple digit temps. Even the noise from his 36 bias iroks has allmost been non existent.
