im running 38s on an 85 yota its has the stock gears what ever came stock with the auto tranny either 4.36 or 4.38 not sure i dont remember havent looked sense i put the lockers in a while back i cant decide between 4.88s or 5.29 my biggest consern is if i go to a 5.29 how many teeth will be in contact be the lower the gear the less teeth you have on the pinion?

With 38's you will absolutely need 5.29's, 4.88's would work well with 33's and be a stretch for even 35's. The pinion will be small but a lot of people run them and have very few issues. Your current stock ratio will be 4.37's with an 85 auto.

I'm running 5.29s with 38s and they have held up well for a year of abuse and counting.

Actually the pirate faq says an 85 auto is 4.43.... I've never heard of that ratio being available though. But 4.30 was never an option, 4.37 was though, for 79-80 pickups.
