I will be getting new tires soon, and I had it narrowed down to the MTRs, but I got some input n the BFG MTs.  What is your experience with either one?  It will be one of these two brands, so please, no suggestions for something else, these are the most practical for me right now

I've ran em both, personally more happy with the BFG but honestly they are very close and as  :stopit: as it sounds - pick the one you think looks better cause they are both going to perform very close. I think the MTR is a bit taller, but the MT will last longer.

I havent had either but from what Brandon was saying I would go with the one that lasts longer in the long run

ive had both. bfg is better in mud.  more quiet and runs taller than a  mtr. in a 31/10.5/r15

bfg measures 30 3/4"  and the mtr is 30 1/8"

bfg is cheaper. but i choose mtr for grip on rocks. its softer. so it wears faster.

i think youd get similar results out of the super swampertrxus. it runns tallerl, 30 7/8"  and its very cheap.

There is a new tire out by toyo it is their mud terran tire it is quiet on the road and asome off road, it is semilar to the mtr.

My landcruiser had the new 35x13.5 toyos and they were the quitest tire I have ever had and I did awesome off road in thick snow as well

My big concern is wear on the road to be honest. my truck is my DD, and I drive A LOT!!! so i definetly want a tire that will preform, but last on the road.  I have the MTRs right now, and have been very happy with them.  they are fairnly qiuet, and they have lasted quite a long time.

I like my MT/R's, I Had BFG's Before.  If your putting them on  DD the BFG's will last longer. Off road the MT/R's are better everywhere except in the MUD. I've tried them both and like the MT/R's better

I can also vouch for long life on the BFG mudders-50,000 miles w/ regular rotations on 33" tires, v-6 Toyota, and they still have a little life left in them! I've also heard that the MTR's are excellent on rock, because of their softer rubber compound. I've thought about Moab with 4 Mickey Thompson Sportman's(street/drag style), in a 33"x19.5".

I have MTR's and love them.  thicker sidewall then the mt's.  Mine have lasted me over a year and a half of driving it every day.  They are quet on the road and have great grip off road.  but they aren't that great in the mud, but i don't like mud that much anyways.  the only proble mi had with mine was i popped a sidewall on one at prarie city.  I am still looking for a replacement.

the BFG sidewalls are weak. i have 20k or so miles on mine MTRs with 50% left.

i think bfg would be the better choice for u. i drove mine for a year and they still had at least 80% left on them. there quiet and work well offroad. are they strongest tire...no, but they work and are a fare price

those toyos are freaking expensive.

There a little bit more than the BFG's and MTR's but it is really worth it in the long run ecspesially as a daily driver. ive ran my 35x13.50x15 toyo m/t on my 4runner for a little over three months and put about 5000 miles on them and havent noticed the slightest bit of wear. they also perform great offroad so ive been really impressed. i used to run BFG's and they were ok but nothing compared to these toyos. they were really worth the extra money ecspessialy since they will last longer. but of course thats just my opinion.

Geeze, it took you guys 10 replies to point out the fact why BFGs SUCK and MTRs RULE. The sidewall of the MTRs are amazing. In fact the used MTRs my father gave me have 2 huge chunks missing from the sides of two tires and its not leaking. Marlin has used BFGs ever since I can remember, probably when they were first made, when ever that was, late 80s? early 90s? and he wasted so many side walls on tree roots and such. You had to be really careful with them. The MTRs seem to be twice as durable. The last time we were on the con, he ran into a very old wheeling friend, Mike Bennet. Marlin and Mike go way back, like 15 years, and they started talking about all of the newer technologies and they both mentioned how strong the MTRs were and that "loosing sidewalls was a thing of the past." So I guess it was a real problem until the MTRs came out.

Also the BFGs are worthless in wet slippery conditions, such as Panamint. TSL swampers and MTRs did wwaayy better then the BFGs.

The MTRs and BFGs are definitely two of the best road tires for mud terrains you can find. They handle great.

If you ask me, I would be the MTRs hands down.

That is what I am kinda leaning toward.  I have had mine for a long time, and I love them.  I just wanted to see what people think.  By the time they wear out, hopefully I will be fully employed so I'm not to worried about it.  I have had BFG in the past (all terrains) and hated them, just the quality in general sucked IMO

Hey mike, I have killed 3 MTR's - ZERO BFG. Could be luck but if you poke either one they will pop. I had the opposite experience - on wet rocks my tsl's sucked and my bfg's worked great. Just goes to show it isn't quite black and white as to the best tire ;)

I agree the MTR's stick better but still, not that much that it would affect my choice. If someone wanted to trade me a new set of BFG's for the new set of MTR's I have right now (haven't even been ran) I'd do it in a hearbeat.

Interesting contrasting views. BD got what he was looking for

I remember the first time Marlin went to Suprise with the TSLs  we only had to winch on I think 3 of the falls or something like that. He did the "Marlin's Mogul" without any problems.

BFG's have had problems in the past with side wall cracking (some time ago).  I went with other tires but came back to BFG.

radial or bias? Radials are very similiar to all the rest but the annoying hi-pitch road noise drove me nuts.

I'm pretty sure he's only used radials.

I really think a radial is a radial as far as sidewall goes, if you want sidewall strength you need a bias. It's a trade off..

Im biased, I have MTR's   I have noticed they are not a great mud tire. But what little wheeling I have done in the dry stuff, they did great! As for as on road, they are pretty quiet, and I just like the tread pattern better. But its very close!  gee that helps huh!
Comedy is the last refuge of the nonconformist mind.

alwayzbroken

When it comes to real mud. Pretty much all "mud" tires are worthless. You need a tire that either refers to "swamps" or "Bogs" in it's name. Guys spend tons of money on BFGs and MTRs aound here and they just clog up instantly. Both MTRs and BFGs are great tires, but suck in thick mud.
If you still have control you aren't going fast enough

Well judgeing by my freinds and I thier is only three tires out that are a good rock crawling tire; TSL's, MT/R's, and the TOYO MT's.

I confirm that the MT sucks for anything other than light duty usage. I have blown side walls aplenty. My next tire 37/12.50/17 MTR as soon as I get 17's

correct me if I am wrong but he said he would be on road most of the time "my truck is a DD , and I drive lot". If so, The BFG's will last you longer and you wont be giving up to much in the way of performance compared to the MTR's. I had a pair of 33" BFG muds on a 74' blazer put 30,000 miles on them took them of the blazer and on to a 80' Toyota 4x and drove them to work for another 2 years (32mi. each way)before I had to junk them. My friends MTR's worked better in the rocks but he only put about 25,000 on them. hope that helps!!!!
