bed bobbing

Has anyone bobbed a long bed? How short can you get 'em?  I want to cut my '84 apart, but want the same length as a short box.

Long beds are about 10" longer than a short bed or extra cab and you can easly take that out I think you can get about 18" depending on were your shackles are.

I bobbed mine 10 inches.  The shacles sit parallel with the edge of the tailgate.  BTW, i have chevy springs too.  If you don't have chevy springs then you could prolly bob it a few more inches and have the shackle parallel with the tail gate.  I was gonna post a picture of mine but my computer is being retarded and won't let me.

An angle grinder with a cutting wheel will cut a far straighter line than a plasma which = less bondo to fall off when your bed hits some thing wheeling  :twocents:

I took 17" off mine and cut 4" off the frame and yes use a grinder with a cut-off wheel

I'm gonna take your advise about the cutter, theres a lot of rust under the paint, and the plas doesn't like it.

I used an air body saw on mine and it was tits.  couldn't have asked for a cleaner straiter.  I took 12 inches out of my 83 shortbed but I have heard of like 19 or something on longbeds.

You should be able to take the same amount out of long beds and short beds because the longer part is infront of the rear tire.

back when I had a bed I bobbed mine to SB length so I could run a shell if I wanted too. Had to chop the frame behind the shackle mount but it worked out nicely..

thats what I m shooting for. I have a can back top that came off my 88 ext cab that I want to run on my 84.  I have to lop off 11 1/4 inches.  It looks like I'll be able to use most of the bed mounts, except for the rear pair?

one of the rear (ok one on both sides makes a pair). Still the mounts are closer together than stock so it's actually stronger
